One person has died and another has been seriously injured following a single-motorbike crash in Matamata-Piako on Saturday evening.
MATAMATA-PIAKO, 20 September 2026: Police are investigating a fatal motorbike crash on Morrinsville-Tahuna Road that left one person dead and another in hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash at about 6.45pm on Saturday, on Morrinsville-Tahuna Road between Paeroa-Tahuna Road and Quine Road.
Police confirmed the crash involved a single motorbike carrying two people.
One person died at the scene
One person died at the scene following the crash.
The second person travelling on the motorbike was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
Police said they are supporting the families of those involved.
Police have not released further details about the people involved at this stage.
Serious Crash Unit examines scene
The Serious Crash Unit attended and examined the crash scene as part of the investigation.
The section of road affected by the crash was reopened before midnight.
Police have not yet determined what caused the motorbike to crash, and enquiries remain ongoing.
Police may release further information while the investigation progresses.
