Moriori people, tchakat henu of Rēkohu or the Chatham Islands, are preparing to celebrate the first Moriori Language Week in November. Hokotehi Moriori Trust secretary Hana-Maraea Solomon says the goal is simple. Everyone is invited to learn, share, and enjoy the language.
“Every time we speak the language, it feels like a connection to our karāpuna, our ancestors,” Solomon says.
Why this matters
For many years the Moriori population was small, and the language was at risk. Community leaders and whānau have worked hard to reclaim identity and culture. Language Week is the next important step.
- A petition in 2023 asked for official recognition of Moriori Language Week in New Zealand.
- The first celebration will start Monday, 17 November 2025, with or without formal recognition.
- The focus is on participation and pride rather than waiting for approval.
What will happen during the week?
Expect a mix of local and online activities that make it easy for anyone to join.
