Nearly 24,000 rural South Islanders can now access free blood tests closer to home, removing long-standing travel and cost barriers.
Introduction
Residents of Te Anau and Wānaka can now access free blood testing at their local general practices. The initiative, announced on 31 October 2025 by Health Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey, aims to make healthcare more accessible for rural New Zealanders who previously faced long travel times and out-of-pocket costs.
Background
In most parts of New Zealand, blood tests are already free. However, many rural communities in the South Island have had to pay because they lacked local collection centers. Patients in Te Anau and Wānaka often traveled more than an hour to the nearest funded clinic or paid a co-payment at their GP.
