Customs officers in Tauranga have made one of New Zealand’s biggest drug busts of 2025, uncovering 21 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipping container from Panama.
It started as a routine cargo check but ended with one of the largest cocaine seizures of the year.
New Zealand Customs officers at the Port of Tauranga discovered 21 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of around 7.3 million dollars. The drugs arrived in a shipping container from Balboa, Panama, on 2 October 2025.
A Regular Inspection Turns Into a Major Find
The cargo appeared normal at first. During x-ray screening, officers spotted unusual shapes that did not match the declared goods. When they opened the container, they found a shrink-wrapped duffel bag hidden between legitimate items. Inside the bag were 21 bricks of cocaine. Each package had the label “VESPA” and a small mouse logo, which may be linked to an international drug network.
