Honouring a Nation That Inspires the Pacific
Today, Fijians around the world celebrate Fiji Day 2025.
It marks 55 years since the blue flag of Fiji was raised high in 1970.
From Suva to Lautoka and from Auckland to Sydney, communities are coming together to honour a story of strength, unity, and hope.
From Girmit to Greatness
The Indo-Fijian story began between 1879 and 1916 when thousands of Indians arrived as indentured labourers. They worked hard in tough conditions on sugar plantations. Yet, through faith, music, and determination, they built new lives.
These early settlers, known as Girmitiyas, carried traditions from India and blended them with the warmth of the Pacific. From this mix came Fiji Hindi, a language unique to the islands. Today, Indo-Fijians and iTaukei Fijians stand together, shaping a nation that values diversity and harmony.
