This year’s local body elections in New Zealand brought a significant shift in representation. A number of Asian New Zealanders have been elected or re-elected to local councils nationwide. Their presence reflects the changing face of local politics and the growing role of diverse communities in civic life.
Newcomers Join Councils for First Time
Five Asian heritage individuals secured council seats for the first time. Among them are Benedict Ong (Dunedin City), Leo Liu (Hamilton City), Prabha Ravi (Hutt City), Gurpreet Dhillon (Upper Hutt) and Karen (Kaz) Yung (Hutt City). Their election highlights a milestone: local councils becoming more inclusive of communities that once had little representation.
Their priorities vary by region, but they share common themes: improving how councils communicate with different ethnic communities, making local government more accessible, and using their heritage and language skills to better connect with residents.
