Labour Raises Concerns Over Cost of Doctor Visits

2 October 2025 | Webfit News

The Labour Party says too many New Zealanders are struggling to afford basic healthcare and is calling for urgent action from the Government to address rising costs.

The Issue Raised

Labour’s health spokesperson, Ayesha Verrall, says that because of underfunding, one in six New Zealanders cannot afford to visit a doctor.

According to Labour, some people are being charged $100 to $200 for a consultation, with prescription fees often added on top. Even lower-cost visits are becoming unaffordable for many families during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Dr Verrall says this is forcing people to skip essential care, which can lead to worse health outcomes and more pressure on hospitals.

Wider Concerns About the Health System

Labour also pointed to other areas where costs are rising, including:

  • Prescription charges after cuts to free prescriptions
  • X-rays, scans, and ambulance services
  • Staff shortages due to thousands of job cuts in the health system

Dr Verrall argued that making community healthcare more affordable would reduce the pressure on emergency departments and help people get treatment earlier. Labour’s Position

Labour is asking New Zealanders to support its open letter campaign urging Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the Government to take action.

“Your health should come before tax cuts for tobacco companies. National’s priorities are all wrong,” Dr Verrall said.

Labour says it would make it cheaper and easier to see a doctor, in contrast to what it calls the current Government’s cuts and funding choices.

What’s Next?

The Labour Party is encouraging the public to sign its open letter to send a message to the Government.

At the time of writing, there has been no official response from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon or the National-led Government on Labour’s latest claims.
