Eden Carson is back in the White Ferns squad after a lengthy injury absence, with New Zealand recalling four players for this month’s three-match T20 international series against Australia in Sydney.

The Otago off-spinner joins pace bowlers Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe and batter Bella James in a 15-player squad captained by Melie Kerr. Dean Brownlie will lead the coaching team on an interim basis following Ben Sawyer’s departure.

The series begins at North Sydney Oval on 18 October and marks New Zealand’s first international assignment of the 2026–27 season.

For the White Ferns, it is also the start of a period of change. Penfold and Rowe return to the pace attack following the retirements of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, while James adds batting depth following Suzie Bates’ departure.

Eleven players from New Zealand’s recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup squad have retained their places.

Carson’s recall comes after elbow surgery kept her out of international cricket since December. With 51 international caps, she brings experience to a spin group that also includes Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire.

“To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special,” Carson said.

She said rehabilitation had required patience, but support around her had helped her reach the point where she felt ready to contribute again.

Rowe, who has played 47 T20 internationals, spent part of the winter in Sri Lanka with New Zealand A alongside James. Penfold has recently returned from Australia, where she represented the Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in the Women’s T20 Max competition.

New Zealand will be without wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze, who has undergone surgery for an ongoing thumb injury. Polly Inglis will take the gloves, with Gaze working towards a return to cricket in early 2027.

Brownlie, the White Ferns’ batting coach for nearly four years, said the Australia tour would give the squad a valuable opportunity to measure itself against strong opposition.

“There’s a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad,” he said.

He said facing Australia would be challenging, but would also give players opportunities to learn and develop their skills. Further coaching support for the tour will be announced next week.

The series forms part of New Zealand’s preparations for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India in 2027.

The squad leaves for Australia on Monday, 12 October, with a warm-up against the Governor-General’s XI scheduled for Thursday, 15 October.

All three T20 internationals will be played at North Sydney Oval and broadcast live in New Zealand on Sky Sport.
