AUCKLAND, NZ
Auckland Startup Week, running from October 20 to 24, is more than a celebration of technology and entrepreneurship. It is a real-world test of New Zealand’s long-term plan to build a high-tech, innovation-driven economy.
The week-long festival of keynotes, pitch events, and networking sessions arrives at a critical time. Families are still managing high living costs, and the housing market remains uncertain. Against this backdrop, the government’s Going for Growth plan and national AI strategy face a major question: can the talk about innovation become tangible jobs, exports, and investment?
The national AI strategy in action
A major focus this week is the rollout of the National AI Strategy, released in July 2025. The plan positions New Zealand as a smart adopter rather than a builder of costly AI systems. Instead of competing with global tech giants, the country aims to use proven tools to solve local challenges quickly and responsibly.
