The busiest international travel days are forecast for Saturday 20 December and Saturday 3 January, with up to 20,000 passengers flying each day.
Pressure on Airports, Planning Strongly Encouraged
Air New Zealand says its teams are preparing for the intensity of the holiday period, urging travellers to plan and allow extra time at airports.
Air New Zealand General Manager Airports Kate Boyer says the holiday season is one of the most meaningful times of the year for the airline.
She says the focus is on helping people travel smoothly while showcasing Kiwi hospitality during what can be a stressful period for travellers.
Passengers are encouraged to:
- Check in online where possible
- Arrive early, especially when travelling with children or oversized bags
- Confirm carry-on limits and gift restrictions before heading to the airport
- Double-check passports, visas, and travel documents for overseas trips
Travellers are also advised to review Civil Aviation Authority guidance on items that can and cannot be carried onboard, particularly during the Christmas gift-giving season.
Lounges and Onboard Experience Get a Festive Touch
Air New Zealand is also leaning into the holiday spirit on the ground. Lounges around the country are offering a seasonal summer menu featuring festive favourites such as glazed ham, Jersey Benne potatoes, mince tarts, and strawberries with whipped cream.
At Auckland International Airport, the new Lookout Lounge is operating alongside the Koru Lounge to help manage peak demand.
A Summer of Movement and Connection
The airline says summer is its busiest time, but also the period that best reflects its purpose. Connecting New Zealanders with the world is at the heart of the operation, especially during the holidays.
As millions take to the skies over the coming weeks, the message is simple. Plan, be patient, and allow time for the journey to unfold.
