Finding a doctor, enrolling children at school and meeting people can make moving to a new region feel like starting from scratch. In Central Otago, a local partnership is helping newcomers find the information and connections they need.

The Central App and Central Otago District Council’s Welcoming Communities programme have collaborated to make practical information easier to access through a ‘New to Central?’ button on the app and a welcome guide on the Central Otago NZ website.

The initiative comes as the Central App marks 10 years of connecting residents with local information, while the council’s Welcoming Communities programme celebrates its fifth anniversary.

Practical help for a fresh start

According to the council’s media release, the resources bring together information about community groups, activities, support services and opportunities to connect.

For people unfamiliar with the region, knowing where to start can be as important as the information itself. The resources are intended to help newcomers navigate everyday questions and begin building a life locally.

Residents can help by showing someone the app’s dedicated button or directing them to the online welcome guide.

A brief conversation could introduce a new arrival to a service they need, a group they would like to join or an opportunity to get involved.

Real newcomers feature in community campaign

A new flyer will also take the information beyond digital channels and into places people visit during their first weeks in the region.

It features real newcomers who are making their lives in Central Otago, reinforcing the message that new arrivals can belong and contribute to the community.

The council is encouraging local organisations to distribute or display the flyers, including:

  • Businesses that meet new residents and workers.
  • Schools welcoming children and their families.
  • Healthcare providers assisting people settling into the area.
  • Community spaces with noticeboards or public information displays.

Residents who have recently moved to Central Otago are also being encouraged to help the next person arriving.

Where to find support

Newcomers can access the information through the ‘New to Central?’ button on the Central App or the welcome guide on the Central Otago NZ website.

Organisations wanting flyers, or needing to replenish their supply, can contact the council’s Welcoming Communities team at welcomingcommunities@codc.govt.nz. The team also welcomes questions and ideas about supporting new arrivals.

The anniversary message is a practical one: helping someone feel at home can begin with a conversation and knowing where to point them.
