Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong addressed a high-level United Nations meeting on sea level rise in New York on 24 September.
Wong said rising seas were already affecting communities and described the issue as requiring international cooperation.
Her remarks highlighted Pacific leadership on climate issues and the principle that states should be able to maintain maritime zones despite sea level rise. She referred to the Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union and a new UN declaration addressing sea level rise.
