Bret McKenzie’s songs have travelled from comedy stages to Hollywood. This Sunday, they will take on the sound of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band.
The Grammy and Academy Award-winning songwriter will join the band for its annual Air Force in Concert at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on 8 November, beginning at 2.30pm.
Their first collaboration brings together one of New Zealand’s best-known musical storytellers and the 65-strong military ensemble for the band’s biggest concert of the year.
The programme spans McKenzie’s solo career and music from Flight of the Conchords, The Muppets and The Black Seeds, giving audiences a chance to hear familiar songs performed with the depth and colour of a full concert band.
For those who know McKenzie primarily through musical comedy, the afternoon will also showcase the range of his songwriting across film, television and live performance.
More than a guest appearance
The RNZAF Band’s own performers will share the spotlight, with Corporal Barbara Graham and the RNZAF Drumline among the featured acts.
Music from film and musical theatre will also form part of a programme designed for audiences of all ages.
Bandmaster Warrant Officer Ben Robertson says performing alongside McKenzie is a special opportunity.
“Bret McKenzie is one of New Zealand’s favourite musical storytellers. His songs have entertained audiences around the world, and it is our great privilege to perform alongside him. Bring your friends and family for a fun filled afternoon.”
From ceremonial duties to the concert stage
The annual concert offers a different setting for musicians whose work regularly includes ceremonial duties, public performances and community engagements throughout New Zealand.
The band also represents the country at commemorative events overseas.
This Sunday, the focus turns to Wellington, where McKenzie and the ensemble will bring their first joint programme to the Michael Fowler Centre.
