The BNZ Breakers will be without American import Josiah-Jordan James for their NBL27 season opener this Sunday, after scans confirmed the guard suffered a torn left hamstring during a pre-season win over Melbourne United last week.

James went down early in that game, and the club has now confirmed he will miss game one at Spark Arena on Sunday and remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.

A Tough Blow, Especially for a New Import

President of Basketball Dillon Boucher confirmed the news, and was clear about how difficult this kind of setback can be for a player who has only just relocated for a new season in a new country.

"Unfortunately, the scan and reports confirm that JJ will be out of action for some weeks," Boucher said. "No player wants to be injured but this is especially the case when you have travelled so far to a new club and playing in a new league."

Boucher praised James's attitude since arriving, describing him as a genuine asset to the club both on and off the court during pre-season.

"JJ has been fantastic for us in pre-season, since the day he landed he has been nothing but positive and a credit to the BNZ Breakers for who we stand for and where we want to go," Boucher said.

No Firm Timeline Yet

Rather than commit to a specific return date, the club says James will be formally reassessed somewhere between four and six weeks into his rehabilitation, with an update to follow once that assessment happens.

Boucher said James, despite the disappointment, is already focused on the recovery process.

"He is obviously tremendously disappointed with the result of the scan and that he will miss several weeks but is already focused on his rehab and working with our incredible medical and performance team with the goal of getting back on the floor," Boucher said.

An Immediate Scheduling Challenge

The timing of the injury is particularly awkward given how the Breakers' season opens. The club faces three games within the first six days of the NBL27 season, meaning depth will be tested almost immediately.

To address the gap, the Breakers are already working on securing an injury replacement player, with an announcement expected within the coming days.

A "Next Man Up" Mentality

Boucher pointed to the team's pre-season form as evidence the club can absorb this kind of setback without losing momentum, noting the Breakers dealt with multiple absences during the pre-season and still found ways to win.

"We showed in pre-season when we had several players out that the team does not dwell on who is missing, but sees opportunity for the next player in," Boucher said. "That is the key, players stepping up and making the most of added minutes and the chance to take on more responsibility."

He said that same approach will define how the club handles Sunday's opener.

"That will be the approach on Sunday, we are going to need our fans more than ever, but we are looking to put on a great show on and off the floor for game one."

Why This Matters Heading Into the Season

Losing an import player before a single regular season game has been played is never an ideal start, particularly for a squad already managing a compressed early-season schedule. But with the club already moving on a replacement signing and pointing to genuine pre-season resilience as proof of concept, the Breakers appear confident that Sunday's opener won't be defined by who's missing, but by who steps up in James's absence.
