Aucklanders turned out in force for the City Rail Link's first day of operation, with train patronage more than tripling compared to a normal Sunday, a clear early signal of just how much appetite there is for the new underground network.
By 5pm, door counters had recorded approximately 61,000 people boarding trains across the network, well over three times the number recorded at the same point last Sunday.
A Genuinely Different Kind of Day
Auckland Transport's Director of Public Transport and Active Modes, Richard Harrison, said the numbers reflect a real shift in how Aucklanders are engaging with the city's transport system.
"This shows how the City Rail Link will revolutionise the way Aucklanders move around their city," Harrison said.
To handle the surge, Auckland Transport more than doubled the usual number of train units running across the network, a necessary move given how many people were out exploring the new routes.
"We've also had more than double the usual capacity of train units operating today, and we've certainly needed them," Harrison said.
A Big Support Effort Behind the Scenes
Getting thousands of extra passengers through unfamiliar stations and new routes safely does not happen on its own. Hundreds of staff from Auckland Transport, KiwiRail and Auckland One Rail were stationed across CRL stations throughout the day specifically to help people navigate the new system.
Harrison acknowledged that for many Aucklanders, today's journey felt closer to visiting an unfamiliar city than commuting through their own.
"At this time though, we appreciate this is all very new to people, and almost like travelling around a new city," he said.
He said staff had been focused on explaining new routes and transfer points, expecting that this kind of guidance will become far less necessary as Aucklanders settle into the new network over the coming weeks.
The Real Test Comes Tomorrow
While today's numbers were driven largely by curiosity and opening-day enthusiasm, Auckland Transport is treating tomorrow as the network's first genuine stress test.
Train services begin just after 5am tomorrow, kicking off the first weekday morning commute through the City Rail Link.
"The first weekday morning commute should really put the CRL through its paces," Harrison said, adding that based on today's performance, Aucklanders can expect a well organised network with plenty of capacity to handle the load.

For anyone planning their first weekday commute through the new network, Auckland Transport is recommending a bit of preparation rather than assuming today's routes will work exactly the same tomorrow during peak hours.
