New Zealand cricket fans have another reason to celebrate as the BLACKCAPS prepare to face India in one of the most anticipated home series of the summer.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Sky have confirmed that the opening T20 international against India on Thursday, 22 October, will be broadcast live and free on Three and ThreeNow, allowing viewers across the country to enjoy the match without a Sky Sport subscription.

In a further development, NZC will stream the first-innings Powerplay live on its official TikTok account, using a vertical video format designed specifically for mobile phones.

The initiative, believed by its organisers to be a world-first for international cricket, is part of a broader effort to introduce the sport to younger audiences.

The announcement comes as excitement builds for the five-match BLACKCAPS–India T20 series, with the opening match scheduled for 8pm at Christchurch's Hagley Oval.

A New Way to Watch Cricket: Powerplay Live on TikTok

One of the most interesting developments is NZC's decision to bring live international cricket to TikTok.

The opening Powerplay of the first innings will be streamed on NZC's official TikTok account in a vertical format.

Unlike a conventional television broadcast, the presentation is designed for viewers holding their phones upright.

The coverage will begin as the teams take the field, allowing viewers to experience the traditional Māori call to field and national anthems before the cricket begins.

The Powerplay itself consists of the first six overs of a T20 innings.

During those overs, only two fielders are permitted outside the 30-yard circle, creating opportunities for aggressive batting and early wickets.

It is often one of the most entertaining phases of a T20 match.

By making this portion available on TikTok, NZC hopes to attract people who may not normally sit down to watch an entire cricket match.

Importantly, TikTok will not carry the full match under this arrangement. The live stream is limited to the first-innings Powerplay and associated pre-match coverage.

NZC Wants to Reach a New Generation of Cricket Fans

NZC Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Glenn Critchley says engaging younger New Zealanders is a key priority.

“A key priority for NZC is engaging younger Kiwi audiences, and that means being present on the platforms they use every day,” Critchley said.

He believes TikTok offers an opportunity to reach people who already use the platform to follow sport and entertainment.

“The powerplay is T20 cricket at its most explosive, making it the perfect bite-sized hit of international cricket for the TikTok generation.”

NZC hopes viewers who discover cricket through the short live broadcast will continue watching the remainder of the match on Three or ThreeNow.

The initiative is being delivered through a partnership involving NZC, Sky and sports technology company WSC Sports.

WSC Sports is supporting the production of a vertical viewing experience tailored to TikTok.

Three International Matches Will Be Available Free This Summer

The free-to-air arrangement extends beyond the India series.

NZC and Sky have confirmed three international T20 matches will be available live and free during the 2026–27 summer.

Confirmed Free-to-Air Cricket Matches

Date| Match| Start time| Free broadcast
Thursday, 22 October 2026| BLACKCAPS vs India – 1st T20I| 8pm| Three and ThreeNow
Saturday, 12 December 2026| WHITE FERNS vs Bangladesh – 2nd T20I| 1pm| Three and ThreeNow
Tuesday, 26 January 2027| BLACKCAPS vs Sri Lanka – 1st T20I| 6pm| Sky Open and ThreeNow

The first-innings Powerplay of each of these three matches will also be streamed live on NZC's TikTok account.

Sky's Head of Content Partnerships Adam Crothers says the initiative is designed to make international cricket more accessible.

“We're proud to work with NZC to make international cricket more accessible to New Zealanders,” Crothers said.

He said combining free-to-air television, digital streaming and subscription coverage would help reach fans with different viewing preferences.

Sky Sport will continue broadcasting the full international summer schedule.

BLACKCAPS vs India: Full T20 Series Schedule

The five-match series will be played across Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton.

Date| Match| Venue| Start
Thu 22 October| 1st T20I| Hagley Oval, Christchurch| 8pm
Sat 24 October| 2nd T20I| Hagley Oval, Christchurch| 8pm
Tue 27 October| 3rd T20I| HNRY Stadium, Wellington| 8pm
Fri 30 October| 4th T20I| Eden Park, Auckland| 8pm
Sun 1 November| 5th T20I| Seddon Park, Hamilton| 8pm

All times are New Zealand local time.

The opening two matches at Hagley Oval and the final match at Seddon Park have already sold out, according to NZC's earlier ticketing announcement.

The fourth T20 international at Eden Park is also attracting considerable interest, with organisers hoping for a record-breaking crowd.

The India tour will continue with five one-day internationals and two Test matches in November.

Auckland Fans Have a Major Cricket Weekend Ahead

For cricket supporters in Auckland, Friday, 30 October, will be a particularly important date.

The BLACKCAPS will face India at Eden Park in the fourth T20 international, with the match beginning at 8pm.

NZC has previously indicated that the Auckland fixture could challenge the country's existing attendance record for a bilateral international cricket match.

That record stands at 36,523 spectators.

The potential record has not yet been achieved, but strong advance ticket demand suggests the fixture could become one of the standout sporting events of the summer.

For New Zealand's large and passionate Indian cricket-following community, the series also provides an opportunity to experience one of international cricket's most popular teams playing on Kiwi soil.

At the same time, the series is a major occasion for BLACKCAPS supporters hoping to see their team perform strongly against a formidable opponent.

What About the WHITE FERNS?

The free-to-air announcement also includes an important opportunity for women's cricket.

The WHITE FERNS' second T20 international against Bangladesh will be broadcast live and free on Saturday, 12 December.

The match is scheduled to begin at 1pm at Saxton Oval in Nelson.

It will also receive the first-innings Powerplay TikTok treatment.

The inclusion of a WHITE FERNS fixture gives the initiative a wider purpose beyond the highly anticipated men's series against India.

For young girls and emerging cricketers, easier access to women's international cricket can help increase the visibility of players and teams.

Whether the new digital approach translates into sustained audience growth remains to be seen.

Webfit News Analysis: Free Cricket Could Be the Bigger Win

The announcement is being promoted partly as a technological innovation, with TikTok providing a new way to experience live international cricket.

But there is another important element.

Three international matches will be available to New Zealanders without requiring a paid sports subscription.

For families managing rising household expenses, access to live sport can be an important consideration.

Subscription services provide extensive coverage, but not every household can justify the ongoing cost.

Free-to-air matches can introduce cricket to viewers who may otherwise only see highlights or short social media clips.

TikTok adds another layer by meeting younger audiences on a platform they already use.

However, the approach also raises an interesting question for the future of sports broadcasting.

Will short-form live coverage encourage people to watch more cricket, or will some viewers become satisfied with watching only the most explosive moments?

NZC is clearly betting on the first possibility.

The opening six overs may be enough to attract attention, but the wider ambition is to turn casual viewers into long-term supporters.

For the BLACKCAPS, WHITE FERNS and the future of New Zealand cricket, that could prove more valuable than any single viral video.

As the BLACKCAPS prepare to face India in Christchurch, the biggest winner may be the Kiwi cricket fan who can now watch international action live, free and on the platform that suits them.
