Before paying your first rates instalment, it's worth checking whether you could receive up to $830 through the Government's Rates Rebates Scheme.

The first Horowhenua District Council rates instalment of the 2026/27 financial year is due by 15 September. Your rates invoice will arrive in your letterbox or inbox soon. You can also check your rates now at ratesinformation.horowhenua.govt.nz.

The Government's Rates Rebates Scheme provides rebates of up to $830 for eligible low-income ratepayers and SuperGold cardholders for the 2026/27 rating year (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027).

Rebates are calculated based on household income, the total amount of rates charged on your property, and personal circumstances. For many residents, the rebate can make a meaningful difference in managing household costs.

Horowhenua District Mayor Bernie Wanden encourages residents to check whether they qualify.

"We know many households are still feeling the pressure of rising living costs. A rates rebate can provide valuable support for those who are eligible," says Mayor Wanden.

Applicants are encouraged to use the online rates rebate calculator before applying.

To apply, you'll need proof of income for the tax year 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, including any interest earned, proof of your spouse's, partner's or joint income if applicable, and your SuperGold Card if you have one.

Need help with your application? Drop-in help is available from 9am to 3pm, between 17 August and 4 September, at Council's Civic Building in Levin. No appointment is needed, and our team will be available to help you complete your application.

Applications can be submitted by email to ratesrebates@horowhenua.govt.nz or in person. Applications close on 30 June 2027.

If you're finding it difficult to pay your rates, please contact Council as early as possible. Council may be able to help through payment plans, and other options.
