Palmerston North bus users will need to use temporary stops in Te Marae o Hine – The Square from Monday, 7 September, while road repairs are carried out around the Main Street Bus Terminal.
The relocation is expected to remain in place for about four weeks.
Palmerston North City Council says the work is the final stage of Main Street upgrades following earlier road repairs and a wastewater pipe upgrade near the terminal.
What bus passengers need to know
Three temporary bus platforms will operate from the existing bus shelters in The Square, using the same arrangement that was in place during earlier roadworks.
InterCity services will move to the front of the i-Site.
There will also be no car parking available in Te Marae o Hine – The Square during the construction period, as space is needed for the temporary bus platforms.
Nearby businesses will remain open.
Main Street will stay open
Fulton Hogan will carry out work during both the day and night in an effort to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.
Main Street will remain open to traffic in both directions, although a temporary traffic layout will be in place.
The work includes strengthening a section of road approaching the bus terminal between the Downtown car park and the terminal.
Transport and Development Manager Tyler da Silva said closing the terminal was necessary to complete the work safely.
“We know this is a significant change for passengers, so clear signage has already been installed at the temporary platforms, as well as on the buses,” he said.
Why there may be days with little activity
Part of the repair work involves pouring concrete and allowing it to cure before asphalt can be laid over the top.
That curing process can take about three days, meaning there may be periods when passengers see little or no activity at the construction site.
Footpath, kerb and channel work around the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel will also continue alongside the road construction.

Horizons Regional Council senior transport planner Isaac Mills said passengers should check the latest detour information before travelling.
The free Transit app also provides live bus tracking, allowing passengers to see when their next service is expected to arrive.
The temporary relocation is expected to last about four weeks, after which services are planned to return to the Main Street Bus Terminal.
