Christmas trees in September might feel early, but New Zealand retailers say the countdown to their biggest trading period is already beginning, with just three months remaining until Christmas Day.

NEW ZEALAND, 25 September 2026: If you walk into a shop over the coming days and suddenly spot a Christmas tree, don’t be too surprised.

Today marks exactly three months until Christmas Day, and Retail NZ says stores around the country are beginning preparations for the crucial summer shopping season.

That means Christmas trees and decorations will start appearing, seasonal pop-up stores will begin opening and retailers will turn their attention to stock, staffing and promotions well before December arrives.

For shoppers it might look like Christmas is getting earlier every year.

For retailers, however, September 25 is an important planning date.

Why Christmas starts in September for retailers

Retail NZ Chief Executive Carolyn Young says retailers cannot wait until December to prepare for their busiest period.

“September 25th is an important date on the retail calendar, as it marks just three months until the biggest shopping period of the year,” Young said.

Behind the decorations is a substantial amount of preparation.

Businesses need to forecast demand, order sufficient stock, prepare promotional activity and make sure they have enough people available to handle increased customer numbers.

Seasonal recruitment can also begin well before the Christmas rush.

“Retailers will need to start looking at hiring seasonal staff, getting in stock, preparing for sales and providing refreshers for staff on how to cope with the extra busyness on the shop floor,” Young said.

“The earlier store managers can tick these things off, the less pressure there will be when it comes to the crunch time.”

Yes, the Christmas trees are coming out

For people who believe Christmas decorations should remain packed away until December, the next few weeks may be challenging.

Retail NZ says several stores begin putting up their Christmas trees from September 25.

Christmas-themed shop windows and the familiar red, white and green decorations are also expected to become increasingly visible.

“While some people may think it’s too early, several stores begin putting up their trees on September 25,” Young said.

“With the days getting longer, the time is right to start sharing some seasonal cheer with our communities.”

But this Christmas comes after a difficult year for households

Behind the festive mood is a more serious question: how much will New Zealand households be prepared to spend this Christmas?

Retail NZ says 2026 has been a particularly difficult year for many consumers and businesses, pointing to high fuel and electricity costs as pressures on household budgets.

That makes this year’s Christmas trading period particularly important for retailers.

Businesses may be preparing for increased customer numbers, but shoppers will ultimately decide how strong the season becomes.

For households already watching weekly expenses closely, Christmas spending may involve more planning, shopping around and spreading purchases across several pay cycles rather than leaving everything until December.

Starting earlier can potentially help families spread the cost, although consumers still need to stay within what they can afford.

Christmas is much more than one day for retailers

The importance of Christmas to retailers extends well beyond December 25.

The build-up includes seasonal hiring, Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, Christmas shopping, Boxing Day sales and the wider summer holiday period.

For businesses carrying seasonal inventory, getting forecasts wrong can also be costly.

Too little stock means missed sales during one of the strongest shopping periods of the year.

Too much can leave businesses discounting unsold Christmas products once the season ends.

That is why the planning begins while Christmas still feels a long way away to many consumers.

91 days to go

As of September 25, there are 91 days until Christmas Day.

For shoppers, there is still plenty of time.

For retailers, the countdown has already started.

So if Christmas music, trees and decorations suddenly begin appearing in stores while September is still on the calendar, it isn’t necessarily because retailers have forgotten what month it is.

They’re preparing for the most important shopping season of the year.

And after a challenging 2026 for many businesses and households, retailers will be hoping there is enough Christmas cheer, and consumer confidence, to go around.
